Who was tristan de luna?
Don Tristan de Luna y Arellano was a sixteenth century Spanish conquistador who is credited with bringing some of the earliest Europeans to the Gulf Coast. They explored the Gulf Coast, including Mobile Bay, and attempted to establish a permanent settlement in what is now Pensacola, Florida. Unfortunately, the colonists were defeated by a strong hurricane shortly after their initial landing and their early efforts at settlement were not successful.
On May 11, 2019, Tristan de Luna Chapter DAR members, in celebration of the chapter's 75th anniversary, dedicated the only official historical marker that recognizes the Tristan de Luna expedition's landing at Mobile Bay.
